Biblical word study on the word 'renew'

The word renew appears 6 times in the Scriptures. As I believe that God is calling us to a time of renewal, I thought it best to do a study on this word and decided to share it with you. I hope it is of some help to you and that God speaks to you through it, as He speaks to me.

Today we will be looking at the first time the word 'renew' is used in Scripture where it is found in 1 Samuel 11 v 14. Grab your Bible and read the text so you can follow the study.

ANTECEDENT

Israel demands a King. They are no longer sure they can depend on God (despite all the marvellous things they have witnessed at His hand). They want a King (like everyone else has). God gave them a man called Saul. Not everybody agreed with this choice however, rejecting him as their King and voicing their opinion to whoever would listen.

One day an Israel town was defeated by the Ammonites. Fearing for their lives the captives asked the Ammonites if they could enter into a treaty with them. The Ammonites agreed on the condition that they could pluck out the right eye of each one of the captives. Not relishing the thought of this the Israelites asked for some time to see if anyone would come to rescue them. The plan of the Ammonites was to bring shame on the Israelites taking away their ability to engage in warfare. A warrior needed his right eye in order to take aim as his left eye was hidden behind his shield during battle. A warrior who could not war was open to attack and certain defeat.

The Ammonites agreed to give the Israelites seven days before they would be bound to enter into the treaty with them and suffer its fate. The news spread throughout Israel. When Saul heard about it he raised an army to defeat the Ammonites......and defeat them he did. Saul, the King, was able to defeat the enemy of his people and set them free. Saul was not interested in vengeance on those who did not think he could do the job so when it was suggested that those who did not want him to be King should be put to death Saul announced that nobody would die because they were all going to be celebrating the victory that God had won through them that day.

LIFE APPLICATION

Jesus is our King. If we cannot embrace Him as our King WHOLEHEARTEDLY, we will be divided within ourselves. This division will weaken us and make us vulnerable to our enemy, who will prevent us from being the warriors we are called to be. We will not be able to avail ourselves of the weapons of warfare that Christ has provided for us because we will have been blinded by the enemy. When we are no longer able to war, he will have us defeated in increasingly more areas of our lives. Just as the Israelites sent the word out for someone to save them so must we call out to our King, Jesus, to deliver us from our inability to trust Him fully. It is only as HE enables will we see our doubts disappear and our faith increase - a firm immovable knowledge that Christ is our all sufficiency and that in Him we lack no good thing.

Us and Them

Have you ever marvelled at the relationship humans have with animals. How very quickly animals can be conditioned to trust us.

My husband has befriended a couple of scrub turkeys. The female he calls "Laudy" after the olympian - Laudy Tourkey (apologies if name misspelt). The male was named by two of our grandsons and his name is 'scrubber'

At first timid and reticent to come close to us the birds now come to our back door and call us or call us from outside our bedroom window. Laudy has even ventured a little inside the back door - the risk being worth the piece of bread hubby has for her.

Scrubber has been a little on the outta as Hubby consistently admonished him for chasing Laudy and generally giving her a hard time. It seems he has come to terms with their behaviours now as he just as readily has morsels for Scrubber as he does for Laudy.......much to Scrubber's delight.

The turkeys have brought such pleasure to my husband who looks forward to having them greet him every morning. Pleasure is also derived from the fish in the creek on our front doorstep.

Every morning Hubby throws a handful of dried dog food to the fish who tussle for the small morsels. As soon as the fish see a human shadow from the top of the bank they swarm to the pool in the hope of having their efforts blessed.

All I seem to do is work

Have you ever felt that all you see to do is work?

The key question is 'am I working hard? or am I working smart? There is a difference. I have spent most of my life working hard, and have some things to show for it..................BUT........I have realised that if my old age (which is fast approaching) is going to be really comfortable I need to work smart!!!

This increases my learning as well as gives me an appreciation of what the internet marketing world is all about.

Years ago the potential to become a millionaire would have been so far out of reach of the common person that they would not have even attempted it. But today, the chance of becoming a millionaire and generating an income that is renewable is very,very possible.

Same ol' same ol'

Have you ever arrived at a point in your life when you are just tired of the same ol' same ol'? I am there NOW...........so I decided to see what I could do about it and began to investigate internet marketing with a view to making enough money to leave full-time employment and have some left over for philanthropy.

This has been quite a journey and I am beginning to come out of the haze of information overload to a place where I am gaining some understanding.

What's up

That's an excellent question. One that can be asked every single day of anyone we meet. What's up? is mostly asked when someone is looking downcast or forlorn or alone. It is usually followed by the response 'Nuthin'. Paradoxically, nuthin' usually means something.

How tuned in are we to each other? Do we really care what goes on in the life on another or are we so rapt in our own that we barely notice. Do we seek to expand on the 'nuthin' responses we get.

Next time you get a ''nuthin' response take the time to become interested in finding out the something that is behind the nuthin'.

It may surprise you. You may just be the one to show that someone does actually care.

We are living in a time when we see the world shrinking before our very eyes, and the smaller it gets, the more ego-centric we become.

Let's try to become other-centric and reap the rewards before the world closes in around us and we find ourselves alone on a crowded planet.

I went to visit my mother today in hospital. She has been there for 6 weeks and will probably be there for a while yet. Lately I have begun to think about the ebb and flo of life, whilst contemplating the fact that the day will come when my one remaining parent will leave also. Looking at my mother, I see the ebb of life.

We never seem to run out of humans do we? Have you ever heard of a society for the preservation of humanity due to the fear that it will one day be extinct?

I came out of my mother's room to see the new baby of a friend. Looking at that baby, I saw the flo of life and wondered what his life choices will be in 20 years when he has become a man and before he too begins to ebb.

A friend who was also gazing upon this newborn commented on the fertility stats and that fact that most countries are well below their optimum fertility level - in other words, not producing enough of the flo of life to compensate for the ebb.

Gets one to thinking? If the flo continues to exceed the ebb, how long will it be before we are an extinct species?

Now, if you subscribe to the evolution worldview you have the dilemma that possible extinction poses. If we are the animals who are the highest in the food chain, who is there to preserve us from extinction?

On the other hand, if you subscribe to the Creationist worldview you will be feeling a whole lot more comfortable when you look to the future. Creationism tells us we have been especially created by a God who has made us in His image - being able to love (as He is love) being able to create (as He is the Creator) etc. A God such as this would surely preserve His creation, would provide a way of escape from a doomed future..........hmmmm..........might pay to investigate this more closely.

Have you ever wondered what it is in we humans that makes our parents so important to us. We all need the box of tissues when we watch shows like 'Find Your Family' because our familial roots are so important to us...............why is that?. Do you think a snake spends much time searching for its mother once it has shaken off the restrictions of the shell or wriggled free of the birthing canal? Once a bird has learned how to spread his wings and fly, does he return and bring his offspring to meet his mother? It's uncanny isn't it? How many people who have been adopted out (for varying reasons) can testify to a hankering deep inside them to know the two people who are responsible for their presence on this earth? - most I would venture to say. Our connection to our mother, particularly, is primal...........hers is the first voice we hear (from inside the womb); we are comforted before birth by the rhythmical beating of her heart - she is our first love. Some people are messed up in life because they were rejected by one or both parents..........................have you ever wondered what it is in we humans that makes our parents so important to us?
